Why a roof can leak after a patch
A surface patch can miss the opening, end on damaged material or leave the wrong layers connected.
Ask about your roof
The drip and the opening can be apart
A ceiling stain shows where water reached the room, but water can travel before it arrives there. A patch directly above the stain can leave the true roof opening untouched. An inspection follows likely water paths and examines the coverings, flashing and joints along them.
De Soto Roofing Co helps get that repair question back onto the actual roof. A free inspection can examine what the previous patch covered and how the surrounding details work.
A patch needs a sound place to end
New material has to connect to compatible covering and a suitable base. Brittle shingles can break when they lift, widening an opening beyond the visible defect. Soft decking does not provide sound fastening. Covering either condition with another patch leaves the connection unresolved.
At a vent pipe, the collar, flashing base and shingle laps have separate jobs. At a wall, the roof flashing has to work with the wall covering. Sealant spread over the exposed joint cannot replace a missing or damaged layer behind it.
The useful repair can be larger than the mark
Opening a failed detail sometimes reveals damaged wood or underlayment. That discovery changes the scope because those layers support the finished repair. It is different from deciding that every repeated leak needs a complete roof replacement.
A sound roof around a local failure can still support a targeted correction. Widespread deterioration calls for a larger conversation. The repair boundary is where the new work can finish on sound roof material.
Get the roof opening checked
Tell us where water appears and anything you already noticed about when it started. You do not need to climb up or diagnose the patch. If water is entering now, call and say so. Stay away from wet electrical fixtures and sagging ceilings.
